James Bunyan Hume papers, [ca. 1877-1900].

Included are a few letters written by Hume, primarily to his future wife; MSS of some of his writings; an autobiographical narrative and copies of letters written by him (and his brother John) describing journey to California in 1850, gold mining, and experiences as sheriff, etc., prepared for possible publication; a biographical sketch; and miscellaneous material re Black Bart (Charles Bolton). Included also: a letter written to John Hume, his brother, by a friend, John Salmon, from Cold Springs, Calif., Apr. 28, l850, describing his voyage to California via the Isthmus and experiences mining; and a letter from John to his sister Mary, written from Placerville, May 24, l851, on an illustrated letter sheet, ("Placerville..."), describing the town, his law practice, and James's efforts at mining.

Wells, Fargo & Company was founded in 1852 by Henry Wells and William G. Fargo. Wells and Fargo had also established the American Express Company with John Butterfield in 1850. In 1857 Wells Fargo, American Express, Adams Express, and United States Express formed the Overland Mail Company, which Wells Fargo took over in the early 1860s.
